One More Crisp Night Before Midweek Warm-Up and Late-Week Storms

Central Virginia is enjoying a gorgeous, low-humidity Tuesday evening under high pressure. Still, a shifting pattern will bring back summer warmth and humidity before an unsettled frontal boundary arrives late in the week.
Key Highlights
Another Cool Slumber Tonight: With high pressure sitting squarely overhead, calm winds and clear skies will allow for another round of strong radiational cooling. Expect overnight lows to dip into the upper 50s inland and in the Piedmont, with lower 60s in the metro and mid-60s at the coast.
Midweek Warm-Up: The surface high slides offshore by Wednesday, kicking off a southerly return flow. Temperatures will bounce back into the upper 80s to near 90°F on Wednesday, pushing into the low-to-mid 90s by Thursday alongside gusty south-southwest winds.
Late-Week Storm Potential: A cold front approaching from the north will introduce scattered showers and thunderstorms starting late Thursday afternoon and running through the weekend, bringing an unsettled airmass back to the region.
Detailed Forecast
Tonight: Mostly clear and crisp. Winds become calm, letting temperatures drop quickly after sunset into the upper 50s across outlying and Piedmont areas, and around 60°F–63°F in Richmond.
Wednesday: Beautiful and sunny to start, then warming as winds shift south. Highs will reach the upper 80s to near 90°F with comfortable humidity lingering through the first half of the day.
Thursday: Hot and breezy. Highs climb into the lower to middle 90s with increasing humidity (dew points rising into the upper 60s and lower 70s). South-southwest winds could gust up to 20–25 mph, with a 30% to 50% chance of late-day showers or storms developing primarily across our northern zones.
Friday & Saturday: The cold front pushes into the area and stalls, keeping daily chances for scattered afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms in the forecast heading into the weekend.
Potential Impacts
Marine & Wind Concerns: Boaters and marine interests should prepare for a tightening pressure gradient Wednesday night into Thursday. Small Craft Advisories are likely as south-southwest winds increase significantly on the Chesapeake Bay and coastal waters.
Returning Heat: If you enjoyed the crisp air of the last few days, make the most of it—Thursday brings a brief return of high heat indices before storm chances ramp up.
Special Focus: Climate Change and RVA's Weather Patterns
As we navigate this quick bounce back from crisp autumn-like nights into late-summer heat and incoming storm tracks, it highlights a persistent characteristic of our changing regional climate:
- Compressed Transitional Seasons: Fall and spring in the Mid-Atlantic are increasingly compressed. Instead of a smooth, gradual cooling trend through September, our weather behaves like an accordion—swinging abruptly from Canadian high-pressure airmasses that deliver crisp 50-degree nights right back into stubborn subtropical ridges that spike temperatures near 90°F.
- Amplified Frontal Moisture Interceptions: When cold fronts drop down from the north this late in the season, they collide with a much warmer, moisture-rich local atmosphere (holding roughly 7% more water vapor per 1°C of global warming). This thermodynamic boost means even modest northern fronts can trigger localized heavy downpours and gusty convective cells when they stall out over the region.
