This evening through 10 PM, a Severe Thunderstorm Watch is in effect for central, southern, and southeast Virginia, as well as southeast Maryland.

If you are anywhere in the mid-Atlantic region tonight through Thursday, keep your weather alerts on loud. We are moving into an extended window of severe weather and heavy, potentially dangerous rainfall across Virginia, Maryland, and North Carolina.

What’s Happening Right Now (Tuesday Evening)

A potent upper-level trough and cold front are colliding with high heat and humidity. Updrafts have rapidly intensified, producing strong-to-severe line segments and discrete storm cells.

  • Severe Threats: The main hazard tonight is damaging wind gusts (40–50 kt mid-level winds pushing through), but large hail and isolated tornadoes are also possible—especially in northern and northeastern zones where storm-relative helicity is higher.

  • Marine Hazards: Small Craft Advisories remain active across local waters, the Chesapeake Bay, and coastal zones, with gusts up to 25–34 knots and 5–6 ft seas overnight. Strong, erratic winds are likely near any convective cells.

Shift to Heavy Rain & Flash Flooding (Tonight – Thursday)

While fast storm motions initially kept flood risks localized, the front is slowing down dramatically. Atmospheric moisture (precipitable water values around 2.0–2.4") is near peak levels, setting up repeated rounds of "training" storms—where heavy rain cells track over the same areas.

Tonight into Wednesday morning: In Central/Eastern VA and the Lower MD Eastern Shore, a flood watch is in effect due to localized flash flooding.

Wednesday afternoon through Wednesday night: The flood threat is area-wide across the entire region, where severe storms are lingering, creating a high risk of flash flooding in urban areas and those with poor drainage.

Late Wednesday through Thursday: In SE Virginia and NE North Carolina, there is a moderate risk for excessive rainfall, and the flood watches will be expanded southeast.

Total Rainfall Forecast: Broad areas will see 3 to 5 inches of rainfall through Thursday, with locally higher amounts possible from Richmond and Emporia eastward to SE Maryland and NE North Carolina.

Looking Ahead to the Weekend

By Thursday into Friday, cooler and drier air will slowly push into northern portions of the region, shoving the moisture axis further south. While showers will linger in southern VA and NC, we are eyeing a favorable trend toward drier conditions and below-average temperatures just in time for the weekend.

Stay Safe: Charge your devices, stay off flooded roads (especially during nighttime hours), and monitor local updates if you are in low-lying or flood-prone areas!
