This evening, the sky overhead might look a bit hazy, but the real atmospheric shift is happening while we sleep. If you’ve got outdoor plans over the next few days, you're going to want to budget some flexibility into your schedule.

We are looking at a three-act weather story over the next 72 hours: a hazy, low-visibility Friday, a scorching, humid start to Saturday, and a turbulent finish to the weekend with strong thunderstorms.

Here is exactly what you need to know to navigate the coming days.

Friday: The Smoke Settles in (Air Quality Alert)

While the smoke from Canadian wildfires in west-central Ontario has mostly remained high up in the atmosphere today, a weak weather boundary dropping south tonight is about to pull that smoke down to the surface.

The Silver Lining: The thick blanket of surface smoke and a shift to onshore northeasterly winds will act as a natural shield against the sun. Friday will actually be the "coolest" day of the stretch, with high temperatures held down in the 80s to low 90s for most of us, and heat indices generally behaving themselves in the 90s.

Saturday: Blistering Heat & Humidity

Once the smoke begins to disperse on Saturday, the atmosphere is making a hard pivot right back into deep summer.

This evening, we trended temperatures up slightly for Saturday, with heat indices of 105+ likely for most of the region. If you are in the far southern interior zones, index values could flirt with a brutal 110°F. Heat advisories are likely to be issued, so please follow standard heat safety precautions if you have to be outdoors: hydrate early, take frequent breaks, and check on neighbors.

The Weekend Finale: Strong Storms & Heavy Rain

The intense heat and high humidity on Saturday are going to serve as premium fuel for a line of incoming storms. As a slow-moving cold front slides down from the Great Lakes, it will stall directly over our region through Sunday and into Monday.

With atmospheric moisture levels incredibly high, any storm that develops will be capable of dumping torrential rain in a short window. If you're heading out to the beaches, note that marine conditions will deteriorate Saturday night with choppy waters, and the rip current risk will be on the rise.

Keep an eye on local air quality indexes on Friday morning before heading out for a run, and make sure you have a way to receive weather alerts Saturday evening when those storm lines begin to organize.

Stay safe, stay cool, and enjoy the weekend as best as you can!
