The cold front we’ve been tracking is finally making its move, gradually sinking south across Virginia. If you’ve been dealing with the muggy air and scattered storms today, relief is officially on the horizon. Here is exactly how the next few days shake out as we transition into the first week of July.

The 48-Hour Outlook: Clear and Comfortable

This Evening & Overnight

  • The Trend: The bulk of the remaining shower and thunderstorm activity will continue to taper off from north to south, leaving most of our area entirely dry by midnight.
  • The Atmosphere: High pressure building down from the north-northeast will push the front clear of our area overnight. However, because the core of the cooler, drier air mass is delayed, tonight remains on the humid side. Expect mostly cloudy skies with overnight lows holding steady in the upper 60s to lower 70s.
  • Winds: Flipping to the northeast following the frontal passage.

Monday & Tuesday

The final days of June are serving up an excellent 48-hour stretch of quiet, stable, and highly scannable summer weather.

  • Monday: Any early morning cloud cover will rapidly give way to clearing skies. It will be completely dry, with a refreshing northeast breeze keeping daytime highs right around a seasonal low-to-mid 80s. Humidity levels will drop noticeably as the day goes on.
  • Monday Night: Perfect for saving a bit on the AC bill. Skies will be clear, and temperatures will drop into a comfortable mid-to-upper 60s.
  • Tuesday: Wall-to-wall sunshine as high pressure settles directly over the Mid-Atlantic. Afternoon highs will creep up slightly into the upper 80s to lower 90s, but dew points will remain low enough to keep the heat index perfectly manageable.

Looking Ahead: A Blistering Holiday Heatwave

Enjoy the early-week comfort, because the models are locked in on a major pattern shift for the second half of the week. A massive upper-level ridge is building eastward from the Mississippi Valley, bringing an intense pre-holiday heatwave to interior Virginia.

The Data Angle: The NWS Wakefield office notes that standard forecast models have trended aggressively warmer over the last few cycles. With strong upper-level atmospheric heights, triple-digit ambient temperatures are highly likely by Thursday and Friday. When you factor in returning moisture, heat index values could easily climb between 105°F and 110°F+.

We will keep a close eye on the exact timing of potential heat advisories as we get closer. For now, plan your outdoor chores for Monday and Tuesday.
