Plan Your Weekend: Why Saturday is Your Only Window to Escape the Storms and Heat

This evening, a Heat Advisory has been issued for Friday, covering portions generally east of I-85 and I-95.

If you thought today was sticky, brace yourself: tomorrow is shaping up to be the peak of this summer swelter before a fast-moving cold front triggers a messy weekend transition. We are looking at a classic three-act weather story over the next 72 hours: a dangerously hot Friday, a surprisingly pleasant Saturday, and a turbulent Sunday return to humidity.

Here is exactly what you can expect as we head into the weekend.

Act 1: Friday’s Brutal Heat and Late-Day Severe Storms

Tomorrow will be the hottest day of the week. Widespread afternoon temperatures will soar into the mid-to-upper 90s, with a few spots flirting with the 100°F mark.

While a layer of dry air high above us might help “mix out” some of the surface humidity inland during the peak of the afternoon, the raw temperatures will be high enough to push heat indices up to 105°F inside the advisory area.

Severe Storm Threat: The severe weather threat for Friday evening has been upgraded. The Storm Prediction Center has expanded its Slight Risk (Level 2 of 5) to encompass almost our entire region (excluding coastal North Carolina).

As a cold front approaches from the north, it will slam into that incredibly hot, energized air mass. Expect scattered to numerous showers and storms to fire up late Friday afternoon and peak into the evening.

  • Primary Threat: Damaging straight-line winds and localized heavy downpours.

  • Timing: Late afternoon through Friday night.

Act 2: Saturday’s Sweet Relief

If you have outdoor plans or yard work to catch up on, Saturday is your golden window.

The cold front will clear the area early Saturday morning, shifting our winds out of the north-northeast. This will usher in a much drier air mass and provide a welcome drop in temperatures.

  • Beaches & Eastern Shore: Expect lovely, cooler conditions in the upper 80s.

  • Inland Areas: Highs will top out in the lower 90s, but it will feel significantly more comfortable thanks to plummeting humidity levels.

Best of all? Saturday is trending completely dry.

Act 3: Sunday Internalizes the Heat (and the Drama)

Enjoy the Saturday break, because the atmosphere resets quickly. By Sunday morning, southerly winds return, pumping the tropical humidity right back into the region. Temperatures will shoot back up into the mid-90s.

Because that next cold front is expected to stall right over us, we are tracking another substantial threat for severe weather on Sunday afternoon and evening. Northern counties are already being highlighted for a Slight Risk of severe storms, with damaging winds again acting as the primary culprit.

Looking Ahead to Next Week

Once we push past Sunday’s stormy transition, the stalled front will actually work in our favor temperature-wise. Next week is trending notably cooler, with high temperatures falling back into the comfortable 80s—though we will have to dodge daily, rhythm-of-the-day afternoon showers and storms.

Stay cool tomorrow, keep an eye on the radar Friday evening, and enjoy the beautiful Saturday breather!
