Tuesday turned sunny and warm behind a weak, dry cold front — low to mid 70s inland, upper 60s to near 70 at the coast — and tonight the high behind it slides offshore and ridges back south. That turn drags Atlantic moisture inland, so Wednesday opens grey west of I-95 with low clouds and patchy fog near sunrise, while the coast gets the sunshine first. Then the ridge parks offshore, south-southwest flow takes over, and we warm dry into the mid to upper 70s Thursday and Friday — Halloween still dry, and still no drought help in sight.

KEY HIGHLIGHTS

🌫 Two different Wednesdays: Low clouds linger much of the morning west of I-95, with patchy fog there within a few hours of sunrise — Richmond could briefly see IFR ceilings/visibility just before sunrise. The coast and Delmarva get sunshine and highs right around 70°.

🌡 Warm finish: Once the ridge anchors offshore, SSW flow lifts highs to the mid to upper 70s Thursday and Friday in the Piedmont and metro, a touch cooler on the Northern Neck and Lower Eastern Shore. No watches, warnings, or advisories are in effect.

🏜 Dry through Saturday — tropics quiet: Halloween looks dry, pleasant, and mild, the first rain chance is slowed to late Sunday into Monday, and no guidance shows drought-busting rain. NHC at 2:00 PM Tuesday expects no tropical formation in the next 7 days, with no active named storms.

SPECIAL FOCUS: The Ridge That Changes Its Mind

A weak, dry cold front slipped through Tuesday afternoon, and behind it a 1034 mb high over Ontario and Quebec is sliding offshore of New England and ridging south into the Mid-Atlantic. That ridge is the main character. Onshore flow on its southern side drags Atlantic moisture inland overnight, where it condenses as low clouds and patchy fog west of I-95, while the coast clears sooner. Translated into plain English: the high is a slow-moving dome that first traps a grey blanket over the Piedmont, then parks offshore and opens the door to south-southwest air. That turn is why Wednesday starts muted inland and Thursday and Friday warm into the mid to upper 70s.

SPECIALIZED CALLOUTS

🌱 Gardening & Soil Brief: No rain through Saturday, so soil keeps drying — deep-water Thursday or Friday, especially garlic and new plantings. No frost threat (lows upper 40s to low 50s inland), so covers stay off; use the mild days to mulch and finish fall planting.

🚗 Commute & Outdoor Rating: 8/10. The only deduction is Wednesday morning: patchy fog and low clouds west of I-95 around sunrise. Thursday and Friday are near-perfect — dry, light winds, mid to upper 70s.

🏠 Home & Energy Brief: A kind stretch for bills — no hard heating or cooling demand, lows in the upper 40s to low 50s, afternoons in the 70s. Open windows Thursday and Friday afternoon to bank the warmth.

🚴 Two-Wheel & Runner's Outlook: Wednesday runners west of I-95: start visible — fog near sunrise, improving by mid-morning; coastal miles are sunny early. Thursday and Friday are the pick: dry, light wind, mid to upper 70s.
