Frost at Dawn, 70s by Tuesday: Richmond's Dry Rebound
RVA Weather Network
Oct 25, 2026, 8:39 PM
Sunday closed sunny and seasonable across metro Richmond β mid to upper 60s under a 1035 mb dome of high pressure centered from southeast Pennsylvania into the northern Delmarva. Tonight that high settles south over the Piedmont, the wind goes calm, and the clear sky lets the ground radiate its heat away β a Frost Advisory runs 2 to 9 AM Monday for the Piedmont west, northwest, and north of the metro, with mid 30s there and locally lower 30s possible. Then the story flips: we warm Monday and Tuesday ahead of a dry front, cool slightly Wednesday, and stay rain-free β a frost-first, 70s-next stretch with no help for the ongoing drought deficit.
KEY HIGHLIGHTS
π₯Ά Frost Advisory Monday 2β9 AM: For the Piedmont counties west, northwest, and north of the Richmond metro. Mid-30s in the Piedmont (locally lower 30s possible) and mid to upper 30s for interior southeast Virginia and the lower Maryland Eastern Shore; milder near the Bay and on the Northern Neck.
βοΈ Dry run continues: No measurable rain expected Monday through Wednesday β ensemble chances for measurable rain through the end of the month are basically zero. Highs in the upper 60s Monday, low 70s Tuesday, mid to upper 60s Wednesday, then well into the 70s late in the week.
π Coast and tropics quiet down: NHC at 8:00 AM Sunday expects no tropical formation in the next 7 days, with no active named storms. Small Craft Advisory for the southern coastal waters until 6 PM Monday β seas 5β6 ft south of Cape Charles, coastal gusts 20β25 mph easing tonight.
SPECIAL FOCUS: The High That Sits Down on Us
High pressure is the main character this week, and tonight it sits down right on top of us. Its center, 1035 mb over southeast Pennsylvania and the northern Delmarva on Sunday, sinks south until its axis lies over the Virginia Piedmont. Translated into plain English: think of it as a clear, heavy lid that kills the wind. With no breeze mixing the air, the ground cools like a stovetop after the burner clicks off, and cold air pools in low Piedmont fields first. Bay and Northern Neck air stays milder, moderated by warmer water. Dewpoints in the 40s are the one brake, but recent nights have still radiated several degrees colder than guidance β hence the Frost Advisory, and the warming that follows once the lid slides east.
DETAILED FORECAST
Monday (Oct 26): Frost start β Advisory 2β9 AM in the Piedmont, mid 30s there (locally lower 30s), mid to upper 30s interior southeast, upper 40s near the coast. Sunny, high 67β70Β° metro/Piedmont, mid 60s Northern Neck and Lower Eastern Shore, light WNW inland and N/NNE at the coast. Cold fingers at dawn, perfect fall by noon.
Tuesday (Oct 27): The warmest of the three β sunny and dry, high 70β73Β° metro/Piedmont, upper 60s Northern Neck and Lower Eastern Shore. A dry cold front drops in late; northeast winds return overnight, with lows in the mid-to-upper 40s inland and the low 50s near the coastβa first taste of the late-week 70s, arriving early.
Wednesday (Oct 28): Slightly cooler behind the front β sunny and dry, high 66β69Β° metro/Piedmont, low to mid 60s Northern Neck and Lower Eastern Shore, northeast breeze. Low upper 30s to low 40s Piedmont, mid 40s metro, upper 40s near the coast. Back to classic late October β with no rain in sight.
SPECIALIZED CALLOUTS
π± Gardening & Soil Brief: Cover tender plants Sunday night in the Piedmont and the metro's north and west suburbs β Monday's mid-30s will bite, while Bay-side and Northern Neck gardens run milder. Soil keeps drying with zero rain in the forecast, so deep-water Tuesday afternoon and keep garlic and cool-season plantings on schedule.
π Commute & Outdoor Rating: 9/10. Sunny and dry all three days with light inland winds β the only deductions are a frosty windshield scrape in the Piedmont early Monday and patchy shallow ground fog possible where the wind goes fully calm. Coastal commuters still get 20β25 mph gusts Monday before they ease.
π Home & Energy Brief: The furnace works hardest before dawn Monday (mid-30s Piedmont, 30sβ40s elsewhere), then daytime sun in the 60s and low 70s does the heating for free β open the sunny-side blinds. Dry air keeps bills kind; check exposed pipes and outdoor faucets in frost-prone Piedmont spots before Monday morning.
π΄ Two-Wheel & Runner's Outlook: Monday miles start frosty β gloves and layers for the first mile, near-perfect conditions by mid-morning. Tuesday is the pick of the three: dry, light wind, and low 70s by afternoon. Wednesday runners stay comfortable, but cyclists on the Northern Neck and Eastern Shore should plan for a northeast headwind on the way out.
